Circus Peanuts: dangling for you
Panem circenses (Bread and Circuses) were said by Juvenal to be the only things the Roman people hoped for. Since then, the term ‘Bread and Circuses’ has become a sort of metaphor for the placating and diversionary tactics used by politicians and people in power. Gaining votes by a continuous distribution of ‘cheap food and entertainment’ provides superficial appeasement to the common populace in order to maintain ignorance and complacency.
